In South Africa, the lack of integration between data systems for various disease areas was a major impediment to improving care and data-based decision making. Disparate systems used to track tuberculosis and HIV (which have a high co-infection rate) hampered the ability of health workers to track patient needs and ensure continuity of care. A global foundation, in cooperation with the South African Ministry of Health, called on Vital Wave to evaluate existing HIV and TB health information systems and determine which system would be the most appropriate for national scale. This project was followed by an implementation phase, during which old systems are being replaced by a national system for HIV and TB data collection.
