Work began in 2013, when the USAID mission in Uganda began looking for a way to transition from cash to bulk digital payments. Vital Wave was commissioned to develop a strategy for USAID partners to make bulk payments to their program beneficiaries. For the next nine months, Vital Wave conceived and managed a proof-of-concept bulk payment pilot for beneficiaries and staff in six USAID partner organizations. The company established the tools and processes required for a smooth, reliable bulk payment system. The proof-of-concept was very successful. Today, USAID partners continue to use bulk payments for beneficiaries and staff through their original aggregator, and all assert they will never go back to using cash.
