As part of a World Bank initiative to support economic development in West Bengal, India, Vital Wave was contracted to assess the local tourism sector. The technical assistance program was designed to enable the Government of West Bengal to prioritize and address critical development interventions in the Sundarbans Area, dominated by Sundarbans National Park. Vital Wave’s Sustainable Tourism practice lead, Christina Heyniger, completed an assessment of the ecotourism and sustainable tourism potential for the National Park and surrounding areas. The assessment helped local and national officials to implement a tourism development plan. The plan linked the conservation of the natural and cultural attributes of the Sundarbans with the socio-economic well being of the local communities through revenue generation, biodiversity conservation and community empowerment (capacity building).
