Health equity, access to health services, and the lack of universal coverage stand as barriers for the majority of informal workers in the global workforce. In addition, the informal economy may face issues with the social determinants of health, including appalling occupational health and safety standards, leading to further health challenges. Mobile solutions have the potential to help address the health vulnerabilities of informal workers. In addition, mobile solutions that focus on mobile money, micro-health, and micro-health insurance may also aid in the issues that this population faces in having access to funds. A global foundation called on Vital Wave to conduct a rapid scan of potential mobile solutions for informal workers and test the resonance and feasibility of these solutions at a workshop attended by informal workers in South Africa. The goal of this work was to identify high-potential solutions and provide recommendations – based on best practices and lessons learned – for their implementation and scale.
